Java fern browning11/18/2023 In our aquariums/setups, we notice this occurring when the plants are more crowded. What additional nutrients should I be dosing to deal with the browning? I have easy green and a potassium supplement but I don't usually dose them since I don't want to overload my tanks with nutrients and cause an algae bloom. It is very normal for this fern to have some brown spots on its leaves. The average growth is 6-8 inches (15-20 cm). Trident Java fern: narrow leaves fork off from each other, creating a ‘trident’ appearance. The whole plant grows to about 4-7 inches (10-17 cm). ![]() I can only conclude it's a nutrient problem.Īlmost all my tanks get their nutrients primarily from soil, both aquasoil and potting soil capped by another substrate. Windelov Java fern: the bottom of the leaf is bladed, while the top of the leaf has a ‘shredded’ or ‘lacey’ appearance. It shouldn't be a CO2 problem either, given how little they need. Ive had mine for more than 2 months now, only notice some slight browning on the leaves. During that time youll get discoloration and leaf melt, but afterwards theyll bounce back. Other plants with allegedly similar needs and growth rates ( crypts, anubias, mosses, subwassertang) thrive where the ferns fail. I read somewhere that java ferns have a very long transition period of like 6 months. There is one cause of brown Fern leaves, however, that isn’t always a cause for concern as some browning on the foliage can be normal. The first of which by far is the most common problem, and easiest to fix. I only trim my Java Ferns when they get too big and I decide to take part of the plant and transplant the trimmings to another tank. All the ferns I've tried to grow were under cheap LEDs or otherwise shaded by several layers of plants, and I've always left them free to attach to decorations or free-float. The most common reasons for ferns turning brown are a lack of humidity, too much bright light, watering issues and over fertilisation. If the whole leaf dies, new ones will replace it. I know it's not an issue with lighting or rhizome burial. ![]() The best I can do is to keep it from dying completely, and they invariably end up looking a lot like this: I've been fiddling with planted tanks for years now, and I still have yet to have much success with java fern.
